From the Department of Awesome Antique Science come these images of 16th century anatomical fugitive sheets from the truly remarkable Wellcome Collection. What the heck is an anatomic fugitive sheet, you ask? Here’s your answer:
Anatomical fugitive sheet (Viscerum…1539) bound at the end of Valverde, Vivae imagines partium corporis humani…1566. Part of the engraving is composed of printed paper flaps that, when lifted, reveal the internal organs of the figure. This is one of a pair of male and female figures… The work was originally published in Rome, 1556.Visit the Wellcome Collection to view more images of both male and female, lifted and unlifted, anatomical fugitive sheets. We have to admit, they beat the heck out of paper dolls!
